Complementary therapies
The Kilbryde Day Hospice offers a range of complementary therapies free of charge to patients and families with cancer and other life limiting illnesses. During the first session, the therapist will ask about your general health and well-being. This is necessary to provide safe treatments that meet your needs. During the following sessions you will be taught some relaxation techniques and receive a therapy of your choice.

Complementary therapy treatments currently available include:

Aromatherapy – Aromatherapy uses essential oils extracted from plants and chosen to meet the clients physical and emotional needs. The massage is gentle and comforting, and can be provided without oils if required. A message table or chair can be used as required.

Indian head massage – this works on the upper back, shoulders, arms, neck, scalp and face. The massage will be applied over the clothes. Indian head massage can help to reduce tension and release headaches and eye strain.

Reflexology – is based on the theory that areas on the hands and feet relate to other parts of the body, therefore by treating the hands or feet the whole body is stimulated and rebalanced. Reflexology can be very relaxing and promotes general well-being.

Reiki – is a Japanese word meaning ‘Universal Energy’. The therapist works on the clients energy field to restore the natural balance in the body, affecting emotions as well as the physical body. Reiki can promote deep relaxation and a feeling of well-being.

Relaxation techniques are taught as part of the therapy session or can be offered as classes on their own. They can include breathing exercises, meditation, visualisation, gentle exercises and stretches.
